Veronica stands at the imposing entrance to her school. She dreads the next steps into the building.

Her phone had been ringing all weekend. Every time she checked it, hoping for Weevil’s name and an explanation of his behaviour, she was disappointed. She didn’t want to talk to anyone else, and she’d ignored the phone every time. Duncan’s name had flashed up regularly on the display; she had ignored him too. Guilt had gnawed away at her as she thought about how she was treating him. Her sudden feelings for Weevil had eclipsed her judgement completely and had blinded her to every thing else. Now she understand how Duncan felt; the pain of sudden inexplicable rejection twisting within her, emotionally draining her.

With a deep, cleansing breath, she prepares herself and walks into the school. Nobody pays any attention to her as she walks towards her locker. The outside world is oblivious to her, uncaring about her emotional state. As she approaches her locker, she can see Duncan leaning against it. She considers ducking away in the opposite direction to avoid him, but knows that this confrontation must happen at some point. Stealing herself for the onslaught, she enters into the breach.

Duncan’s eyes plead with Veronica as she approaches.

“Veronica, I’ve been trying to reach you all weekend. Why didn't you answer your phone? “

Veronica pushes her anger down with the question that was thrown at her. She suddenly feels incredibly under prepared for this conversation and decides to go with brutal honesty rather than protecting feelings.

“I was ignoring you, Duncan. I had no further comments to add to our conversation on Friday and I just wanted to be left alone,” she states, bluntly.

Duncan stands in front of her looking flabbergasted at her harsh, direct words. Collecting himself, he looks at Veronica, his best puppy dog expression on his face, hoping to win her round.

“Is there really nothing I can do? This cannot be it for us surely? “

The pain in Duncan’s voice threatens to overwhelm Veronica but she stands firm.

“No Duncan, nothing.” She looks at him sympathetically. “Like I said, I don’t love you any more that way. I don’t want to be with you.”

Veronica sighs, not sure how she can make anything clearer to Duncan; hoping she’s said enough.

Duncan’s features darken with anger.

“You’re done, Veronica; that’s it. No one will talk to you. You’re an outcast, cut off from all of us.” Duncan spits out, venomously.

Veronica shakes her head in pity, her voice full of scorn as she replies:

“I’ve been there before remember? Whatever you threaten cannot touch me.”

Veronica turns her back on Duncan, effectively cutting off any further conversation. She focuses on putting her books in her locker, as she hears his footsteps echo down the corridor. Veronica manages a sorrowful sigh. She is saddened by Duncan’s reaction to her but she is glad to finally have freed herself from that relationship, even if things had gone terribly wrong over the weekend.

She walks away from her locker heading off down the corridor towards her next class, failing to notice the Latino standing in the doorway of the dark classroom a few meters away from her locker. His face is an image of shame and regret as he realises what a misjudgement he has made in Veronica.

Veronica spends her day in classes, concentrating solely on school and not the mess that is her life. She ignores the snide comments and accusatory glances the 09ers send her way. She sees neither Duncan nor Weevil, both which make her glad, as having to deal with either of them would disrupt the careful balance she has managed today.

As she walks out to her car, she cannot help but notice the motorcycle parked right next to it. She cringes as she looks around, trying to spot the owner, hoping she can make a quick exit without a scene. Her heart leaps into her mouth as she spots him casually leaning against the passenger door, waiting for her.

He doesn’t say a word, just looks at her with a curt nod acknowledging her presence.

She mentally prepares herself for whatever he is about to throw at her.

“If you say that you need a favour be prepared to get kicked, hard,” she mutters, unlocking the car. She is aware that she feels very defensive around him and isn’t sure she truly wants to deal with him right now.

Weevil smiles briefly at her comment, glad she isn’t completely ignoring him like he deserves.

“We need to talk."

He motions towards the front seats of the car, asking for permission to get in.

Veronica says nothing, merely getting into the car, but not starting it until he has lowered himself onto the passenger seat.

“Fine, you talk. I might listen,” Veronica snaps, pulling the car out of the car park and onto the road, unsure for now where she is going.

“V,” Weevil pauses his voice soft, unsure exactly how to continue. Veronica raises an eyebrow in surprise at his sudden change in manner and tone of voice.

Weevil starts again, hoping that if he just opens his mouth, the right words will start coming out.

“V, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have cut you off Friday night.” Weevil feels the waves of shame roll over him again, as he continues.

Veronica’s fingers grip the wheel tighter than necessary, but her mouth remains firmly closed.

Getting no response to his comments, Weevil continues.

“You’re phone rang while you were in the bathroom. I didn’t answer it, but a name flashed up on the screen.”

Veronica cringes, knowing exactly which name would have flashed on the screen. Weevil notices her grimace and carries on.

“I just freaked out. I couldn’t be someone’s dirty little secret again and when I saw his name, I assumed you two were still together.” Weevil tails off lamely, uncertainty in his voice.

Veronica feels her anger rising again.

“But you didn’t think to actually ask me about it; just make me feel like a used whore,” she bites out aggressively.

She notices Weevil’s face flush in shame.

“V, I cannot turn back what I did, but I wanna make it right. Make US right.”

Veronica sits in silence, her face blank as she thinks about what she’s just heard. The anger and hurt still bubble under the surface, but she wants to forgive Weevil, the emotions he stirs up in her make her feel alive. She thinks back to the moments after their love making, the completeness that she felt. She knows she wants that back again, she wants to feel loved and safe, wrapped in his arms. Without her forgiveness, she’ll never be wrapped in his arms again.

Veronica can see Weevils face in the corner of her eye. The pleading look tugs at her heart.

Veronica slows the car down, pulling into a space near the beach. Slowly she turns to Weevil, conflicting emotions warring in her body, but inwardly she stills her thoughts, and looks deep into his eyes, her heart melting at the sight.

“I want this, us, to be right.” Veronica stops, as a grin erupts from Weevil, his eyes twinkling.

Veronica put her hand up to still Weevil.

“But ---”

Weevils face falls, the distress at that one word clearly written on his face.

Veronica gulps, and continues.

“But, I need to know this won't happen again, no more assumptions. If you want to know something ASK.”

She emphasises the last word, looking deep into the deep brown eyes in front of her.

Weevil lets a smile creep across his face as he looks at Veronica.

“No more jumping to conclusions, baby.” Weevil states. His hand rises up, coming to rest on Veronica’s cheek as he leans in for a kiss.

She leans towards him, her heart leaps at the chaste kiss he lays against her lips.

“So, it’s you and me now, Chica?“ Weevil asks.

Veronica nods, quickly adding , “I’m not saying we should rush into school and make out in front of everyone, but no hiding, no pretending, just keep it subtle.”

Weevil grins, leaning towards Veronica again, kissing her passionately, their lips crashing together, as they give in to the desire they have for each other. Veronica’s hands cling onto Weevil’s back, to ground herself, losing herself totally within the moment.

As they pull away from each other, slow, shy smiles, creep across their faces. Veronica’s fingers delicately flit their way over Weevil’s scalp, his strong hands sending familiar tingles through her body, as they stroke across her back.

Weevil smirks as he looks at her, pulling her a little closer.

“So about wish three? Any thoughts?” he whispers into her hair, before leaning into her neck, sucking and gently kissing his way down.

Veronica pulls back, her eyes twinkling with suppressed giggles.

“Still saving it.”

Weevil growls as he pulls her closer again, kissing her roughly.

“Don’t wait too long.”
